The president of the Cumberland Village Association says she’s hoping a new farmers’ market will be a hit in Ottawa’s east end.

Stephanie McNeely says the area around Cumberland is turning into suburb where neighbours no longer know each other and she hopes the new venture can help them meet.

“It’s important because it’s become a real bedroom community. People don’t get out as much anymore,” explained McNeely. “We find that people keep to themselves and don’t really participate in community events as much as has been in the past.”

The village association spent two months organizing the Cumberland Farmers’ Market, which will operate for the first time this Saturday at the Cumberland Arena.

Local producers like Scott Goldsberry are excited about the new venture.

Goldsberry and his wife, Karen, set up Valentino Family Farms about a year ago and sell some of their produce at a roadside stall. Now, they hope the Cumberland market will help increase the demand for their organics.

“I think that’s the one thing that people are really getting into is being able to get food that hasn’t been on a cargo ship or on the back of a truck for the last three weeks,” Goldsberry said.

The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 12, 19 and 26 at the Cumberland Arena and Community Centre on Dunning Road.

McNeely says if the idea is successful, the market will be here to stay.
